Massage to Relieve Stress

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

As human beings, we can not avoid stress in our life. Problems, people, circumstances are always gonna be there to bother our minds and our life. The only way to solve this is by learning how to handle the stress itself. There are many ways to reduce stress but today let's talk about how massage at ShapcCare Therapy can reduce our stress.

Massage can play an important role in anyone whether they are injured or not. Massage can have beneficial effects on people seeking relaxation treatments as part of their professional lives. Benefits can be include pain relief, increased range of movement, and maximized performance.

Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It can come from any event, person, or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. Mental stress is caused by a hormone called cortisol which can also increase anxiety and depression. Our therapists at ShapeCare Therapy can help to reduce stress through massage to help increase relaxation, reduce pain and improve your mood.

Type of Massage at Shapecare Therapy to Reduce Stress

There are 3 types of massage that we recommend to reduce stress, here they are :

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that's mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries.

Therapy Massage

Therapy Massage is the manipulation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy Massage is a Swedish Massage Therapy using massage oil or lotion that contains essential oils.

The Massage technique used to reduce stress

The most common techniques used to reduce stress are deep strokes, trigger pointing, and lymphatic drainage.

Deep Strokes

This technique uses a firm pressure to get deep within muscle tissues because a lot of muscle stress often comes from deeper tissues. Deep strokes increase muscle temperature to increase tissue elasticity which will loosen muscles and reduce stress and tension. When the stress is less, the muscles also decrease pain and will increase their movement.

Trigger Pointing

Another effective technique of massage to reduce stress is trigger pointing. A trigger point is found in the center of a muscle fiber. Fingers and thumbs are used during trigger pointing to apply firm pressure. As the pressure is applied an ischemic reaction occurs. An ischemic reaction is where blood flow I restricted to an area and then increases when pressure is released. Before the pressure is released, the pressure applied will start to soften, creating a numbing sensation. When the numbing sensation has occurred, more pressure can be applied depending on how deep or how big the trigger point is or the pressure can be released. Softening and numbing the trigger point reduces pain and headaches and relieves both mental and physical stress.

Lymphatic Drainage

Stress can also be reduced through lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic drainage involves the stimulation of the lymphatic system to remove metabolic wastes more efficiently. A buildup of metabolic wastes can occur after an injury, surgery, or overuse of a muscle. Metabolic wastes increase muscular fatigue and weakness and can result in swelling and pain. A massage stimulates the lymphatic system. A variety of long, deep strokes is used to flush out the metabolic wastes from the body and replace them with healthy oxygen and nutrients. Flushing metabolic wastes from the body more efficiently through lymphatic drainage reduces swelling, pain, and restriction. Decreasing swelling pain and restriction reduce mental stress.
